Urban Cave : Episode 6

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Urban Cave was completed and presented to public during FCM Degree Showcase. Despite having some problem with the position of the projector, Urban Cave was still a success. Thanks to those that came and support this project and those who actually had the guts to ask me how I did this. I was very shy. And thanks to those who helped me along the way.

It has been a ride and with that note I am posting the final episode of Urban Cave together with some photos.

This was done for Critique 2 session. The sculpture still need some minor adjustment and visual wise,
I have to start from scratch. I spent most of my time at the studio that week to prepare for Critique 2 and was able to record the process. The final structure of Urban Cave will be published soon, promise.

Urban Cave : Episode 4

I had a pile of leftover boxes and brown paper from previous episodes and instead of throwing them away, I put them to good use.

I made the card box lettering to "URBAN CAVE" in a week and thought the only way to present it was through animation. With the concept of factory and production line, coming out with the fake machinery was harder than I thought it would be.

I had to put the animation session on halt few times due to some lighting, hardware and space issues. But one fine morning, I decided to just carry on with it.

Took me 2-3 hours to set up and shoot the whole thing. Post production was done the rest of the day. Thanks to Lea and Josie for helping me with the glue and sticking the pieces together.

Since building the structure for Urban Cave is a huge task, I decided to try on the small scale first. I created the structure in SketchUp before converting it into .eps format for printing.

I cut out the printed pieces and start reconstructing using cardboard and lots of sticky tape. The small scale also allow me to estimate the size of the real structure and the amount of material needed later.

As the deadline approaches, I did a test run on projection mapping to understand the process and techniques. Being my first time with projection mapping,I spent hours preparing for the sculpture, mounting it onto the wall and setting up the hardware before finally started exploring the visual techniques.

Take note that this is not how the Urban Cave is going to look like. This is just a mock up for this particular test. I'll be posting on the small scale Urban Cave structure soon.
