The recognition allow the heritage core zone to be preserved from further development that would change the skyline of Penang Heritage City.

Penang Heritage Trail celebrate the intricate display of architecture which is a combination of the British colonial influence, and the Baba and Nyonya style from the earlier days. These shophouses contribute largely to the character of George Town today.

Problem Identification

-how to stir an interest from the public towards Penang Heritage Trails
-identifying the architecture as Georgetown's identity
-to look at Penang architecture from a new perspective

Ideation/Concept

The architecture of Penang reflects the 171 years of British presence on the island, coalescing with local, Chinese, Indian, Islamic and other elements to create a unique and distinctive brand of architecture. The most common architecture design can be seen on shop houses. Embossed intricate design framing each shop house and the distinctive wooden shutter display in colour during the daylight. But as night approaches, it dims into a block of building by a road side.

The idea is to create a replica of this building and install lighting behind. By night time, user can push any part of the building and it will lit up from behind highlighting the architecture design one at a time. This allow user to have a new perspective on the building as well as appreciate the design.

Aim and Objective

-to have a different outlook on Penang's architecture
-to make building come to live at night
